Course Introduction

To thank OCLS members for their long-standing support of Chinese cultural education in Ottawa, we are launching a special master art introductory class: "Write China with the Brush · See the World Through Color."

Between ink and color, students begin a calm and focused artistic journey. This class is beginner-friendly and goes beyond technique to build focus, aesthetic appreciation, confidence, and artistic understanding.

Who Can Join

Elementary and secondary students age 7 and up, as well as adult learners interested in art.
Instruction is adapted to each learner. Beginners can start with confidence, and students with prior experience can continue to grow.

Course Content

Chinese Calligraphy

  • Learn the origin and development of calligraphy and Chinese characters
  • Understand major calligraphy styles, basic strokes, and structure
  • Practice brush handling and the use of traditional calligraphy tools
  • Begin with Yan-style regular script and classic model inscriptions
  • Build skill through the eight basic strokes and character structure

Watercolor Painting

  • Flowers: learn color and aesthetic expression
  • Landscapes: explore space and integrated color
  • Still life: strengthen observation and form-building skills
  • Rich, engaging content designed for young learners
  • Includes drawing foundations to help students observe, shape, and express beauty

Instructors
Instructor Yongzhong Qu

Mr. Yongzhong Qu

Lifetime Honorary President of the Canada-China Arts Association and art advisor to the Canada Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Institute. He has studied calligraphy for more than 50 years, taught for more than 20 years, and his works have been selected multiple times for collections of notable Chinese calligraphers.
Instructor Wenkui Yao

Mr. Wenkui Yao

A senior Chinese-Canadian painter who studied stage art at Shanghai Theatre Academy and graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Department of Literature and Arts, specializing in oil painting. He has a strong foundation in both Chinese and Western painting and rich teaching experience.

Class time: Sunday evenings, one three-month term, 12 classes total (24 lessons), 45 minutes per lesson

Tuition

OCLS members: $10 / lesson, $240 / term, paid in full
Non-members: $12 / lesson, $288 / term, paid in full

Pre-Class Preparation & Group Consultation

The class starts this Sunday at 6:30 pm. Please arrive on time. During the first class, the instructor will explain the course requirements in detail.

Students taking watercolor should prepare the following materials:

  1. One watercolor paper pad
  2. One set of watercolor paints
  3. One watercolor palette
  4. Several watercolor brushes in different sizes
  5. One drawing board, slightly larger than the watercolor paper
  6. One roll of tape
  7. One small plastic bucket or jar for water
