Celebrating 50 Years of OCLS: Newsletter Update
Dear OCLS Supporters and Friends,
We have some exciting updates to share with you about the Ottawa Chinese Language School (OCLS)
and our journey over the past year.
A Renewed Spirit and Community Support
In June 2023, we faced the difficult news of OCLS potentially closing its doors due to operational
challenges. However, thanks to the passion and dedication of our community, particularly highlighted by
a group working on a documentary about Chinese Language and Culture in Ottawa, there was a
groundswell of support to preserve OCLS’s legacy. Recognizing our nearly 50 years of teaching and
promoting Chinese language and heritage, efforts were made to revitalize and sustain our mission.
Turning the Tide: New Leadership and Initiatives
In December 2023, the OCLS Board made a crucial decision to onboard new members, injecting fresh
perspectives and expertise to help steer our organization into the future. This decision was reinforced by
our Annual General Meeting in January 2024, where two new directors joined our Board, bringing
invaluable skills to support our revitalization efforts.
Strengthening Our Foundation
February 2024 saw a pivotal Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis
conducted to assess our feasibility moving forward. Bolstered by renewed community interest and
strategic plans to secure grants, donations, and sponsorships, we reaffirmed our commitment to serving
the Ottawa community. One of our successful initiatives was the revitalization of our annual Chinese New
Year poster contest, generously supported by sponsorships and culminating in a memorable awards
ceremony in March.
Looking Ahead: Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence
As we look forward with optimism and gratitude, October 2024 marks a monumental milestone for OCLS
– our 50th Anniversary! We are thrilled to celebrate this achievement with the Ottawa community in
appreciation of all those who have supported us throughout the years. Stay tuned for details on our
upcoming anniversary celebration, where we will reflect on our rich history and look forward to a vibrant
future.
