Ottawa Chinese Language School’s August 23 Meeting Outcome

Hello,

An email was sent on August 12, 2022, to 331 community members on our mailing list, and 25 Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) Chinese-language teachers regarding the current situation of the Ottawa Chinese Language School (OCLS), and to seek advice on the charity’s future by proposing two options:

  1. Maintain the organization, or
  2. Wind up and dissolution of organization

The email included a virtual meeting invitation scheduled for August 23, 2022, for further discussion. A reminder email was sent to the mailing list on August 22, 2022.

The meeting started at 7:00PM EST and lasted until 8:30PM EST.  There were nine attendees including the three OCLS board members, legal counsel and five members of the community and/or OCDSB teachers.
Attendees discussed the options, and how the Education fund may be used if the organization is maintained or if the organization winds up. The lawyer reiterated that the education funds are restricted and can only be used for charitable educational activities and not any infrastructure costs. The lawyer also provided some high-level information on the process of winding up the organization.

The community members were given the opportunity to participate in the recommendation for the future of OCLS via email and a virtual meeting.

Based on the discussion, participation, and attendance, the ‘wind up’ option is the most likely, and the next steps would be to start the process.

Volunteers still needed
Despite OCLS winding up, if you are a parent/or guardian who is interested in organizing cultural activities and programs, a new parent committee of volunteers may be formed. Details to follow.
